Are You Prepared for the General Data Prevention Regulation (GDPR)?

A while back, Google put out a blog saying they were Getting Ready for Europe’s new data protection rules. Passed in 2016, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will come into effect May 25, 2018 and will play a vital role in regulating your data.

What is GDPR?

GDPR is intended to protect and gain more control over the personal data of European citizens. Even if you don’t do business overseas, it’s still important to comply with GDPR’s policies and terms for the safety and protection of your company’s information.

According to an educational resource about GDPR, “any stored information that can be used to determine your identity falls under GDPR including name, bank details, photo images, email addresses, IP addresses, social media interactions, and medical information.” In sum, GDPR applies to personal data collected in general, no matter the method.

What are my next steps?

Even if you are not based in the EEA, it’s important to discuss this issue with your legal department or advisors. For your company to remains safe and secure, you must update your Privacy Policy and Terms of Service Agreement to comply with the new requirements of GDPR.

Every business needs to outline data they are collecting as well as how they are using and managing it. You should also be sure your website includes a cookie policy.

What happens if I don’t comply with Google’s regulations?

After today, May 25, 2018, fines will apply for any business not complying with GDPR’s guidelines. These fines can be up to four percent of your global turnover, or over 23 million dollars, whichever is higher.
