Freelancer Social Media Specialist
Overview
Social media is often the first place people meet a brand. Your job is to make that first impression count.
This isn’t a “post what you’re told” role. We’re looking for a partner who can own social media for a mix of client accounts, from deciding what to say to measuring whether it worked. You’ll build the strategy, plan the calendars, write the content, engage with followers, and keep an eye on what’s next.
You’ll work alongside our Content Lead, who reviews content, manages client relationships, and steps in when something needs a second set of eyes. The day-to-day thinking is yours.
Social Media Specialist: Owns social for assigned clients, from strategy and planning through publishing, engagement, and reporting.
Content Lead: Reviews content, manages client communication, approves budgets, and handles escalations.
Platforms, approval workflows, and client involvement vary by account, and we’ll walk through each client’s setup during onboarding. The Content Lead will review all content for your first 90 days while you get to know each client. After that, we’ll sit down together and decide what review looks like going forward.
What You’ll Do
1. Own the social strategy
- Build and maintain a social media strategy for each assigned client, rooted in their goals.
- Plan content calendars that put that strategy into action.
- Stay current on platform updates, new features, and trends, and decide what’s worth trying.
- Keep an eye on competitor and industry accounts.
- Meet with the Content Lead for regular check-ins on direction and results.
2. Write and create content
- Write posts that fit each client’s voice, goals, and calendar.
- Create events, such as Facebook events, as part of client content.
- Follow each client’s brand guidelines, voice, and visual standards.
3. Review, schedule, and publish
- Proofread everything: spelling, grammar, tags, hashtags, and links.
- Submit content to the Content Lead for review before it goes to clients for approval.
- Schedule and publish approved posts and events across each client’s platforms.
- Keep content calendars up to date.
- Flag missing assets, late approvals, or scheduling conflicts early.
4. Engage with the community
- Monitor comments, messages, mentions, and tags.
- Respond to routine questions using approved guidelines.
- Like and engage with relevant audience content when it fits the client’s strategy.
- Escalate complaints, sensitive topics, or anything that could affect a client’s reputation to the Content Lead.
5. Boost what’s working
- Decide which posts are worth boosting and recommend budgets and targeting.
- Run boosts once the Content Lead approves the spend.
- Track results and adjust your approach.
6. Measure and report
- Monitor key metrics monthly, including reach, engagement, follower growth, video views, and link clicks.
- Use what the numbers show to sharpen each client’s strategy.
- Prepare annual performance reports for Content Lead review before they go to clients.
- Pull one-off reports when needed.
7. Stay organized and communicate
- Keep copy, graphics, photos, and video organized in our project management and file-sharing systems.
- Track what’s scheduled, published, pending, and revised.
- Manage deadlines across multiple client accounts.
- Keep the Content Lead updated on content, approvals, and client needs.
- Follow agency procedures for files, account access, confidentiality, and client communication.
What You Bring
- Experience planning and running social media strategy for businesses, brands, or agencies, not just executing it.
- Strong writing and proofreading skills, and the range to adapt to different client voices.
- A proactive mindset. You see what needs doing before anyone asks.
- Comfort with scheduling tools like Meta Business Suite, Buffer, Later, or Hootsuite.
- Experience running boosted posts or basic paid social.
- A solid understanding of social media analytics and how to act on them.
- The ability to juggle multiple clients and deadlines without dropping the ball.
- Comfort working independently and remotely.
- Canva or similar design tool experience is a plus.
- Reliable internet, quick responses, and openness to feedback.
